Holiday SEO for Shopify Stores: What to Fix Before Black Friday

Black Friday is November 27. Whether your store shows up that week is mostly decided in the next few weeks. Here is what shoppers will search from Halloween to New Year's, and what to fix on your Shopify store before the rush.

The short answer

Start now. Google and AI shopping tools need time to find, crawl, and trust your holiday pages, so anything you launch the week of Black Friday is already late.

Before November, put your Black Friday and gift guide collections on permanent URLs, clean up your Shopify product data and Google Merchant Center feed, add shipping and return details, show delivery cutoffs, speed up your store on phones, and make sure search and AI crawlers can reach you. Then freeze big changes until the rush is over.

Holiday SEO for Shopify stores is not one big day. It is a three-month stretch that starts with Halloween costumes, peaks on Cyber Monday, and ends with returns, gift cards, and New Year's resolutions. Each part of that stretch has its own searches, and each one rewards stores that got ready early.

This guide covers the 2026 numbers, the dates that matter, what people search for from Halloween to January, and the fixes that make the biggest difference on a Shopify store.

The 2026 holiday season in numbers

Every major forecast says the same thing this year. More of the holiday is moving online, more of it happens on phones, and more of it starts with an AI tool.

For context, here is how last year went:

  • Online sales set a record. Adobe tracked $257.8 billion in US online holiday spending in 2025, up 6.8%, with 25 days over $4 billion.
  • Shopify stores had their best weekend ever. Shopify merchants sold $14.6 billion over Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025, up 27%. Sales peaked at $5.1 million per minute at 12:01 p.m. Eastern on Black Friday.
  • AI traffic exploded. Adobe measured a 693% jump in traffic from generative AI tools to US retail sites during the 2025 season.
  • Crowds were huge. The NRF counted almost 203 million shoppers from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday 2025, and almost 135 million of them shopped online.
  • Total holiday sales grew 4.1%. That was near the top of the NRF forecast range.

The catch: shoppers are spending, but carefully. PwC found average planned gift spending of $708 this year, down 2% from $721. Deloitte describes value-seeking across every income level. People will still buy. They will just research more and compare harder first, which is exactly where SEO helps.

The 2026 holiday calendar

Mark these dates now. The last column is when your pages should already be live and indexed, not when you start building them.

A few things stand out on this year's calendar:

  • Halloween is on a Saturday. Expect a full weekend of parties and a big last-minute rush on Thursday and Friday.
  • The season is one day longer. Thanksgiving is November 26, which leaves 29 days until Christmas. In 2025 there were 28.
  • Hanukkah starts the Friday after Cyber Monday. Hanukkah gift searches will overlap with Cyber Week deals, so a Hanukkah collection should be ready before Thanksgiving.
  • Christmas is on a Friday. The last full shipping weekend is December 19 and 20. After that, it is express shipping, store pickup, and gift cards.

How people shop this holiday season

1. They ask AI first

This is the biggest change from even two years ago.

  • Adobe expects traffic from AI chat tools and AI browsers to US retail sites to grow 130% this season, and 159% on Thanksgiving Day.
  • Google says AI Mode now has more than 1 billion monthly users, and that AI Mode searches are on average three times as long as regular searches.
  • Salesforce predicts that 20% of all holiday e-commerce traffic will come from AI chat agents.
  • PwC found 29% of shoppers plan to use AI somewhere in their holiday shopping, up from 22% last year. Most use it to research products (75%) and compare prices (55%), then buy on a website or app.

What this means for your store: shoppers now type full sentences. "Gift for my dad who loves grilling, under $75, delivered before Christmas." Your product pages and collections need to answer that kind of question in plain text. Our guides on Google AI Overviews for online stores and getting products into ChatGPT shopping go deeper.

2. The season is longer than one weekend

  • Google says at least half of holiday shoppers are buying gifts at any given time from October through January.
  • Adobe expects $95.8 billion in US online spending in October alone, up 8%, helped by Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days on October 6 and 7.
  • Even Halloween starts early. The NRF found 49% of Halloween shoppers start in September or earlier.

Your holiday pages need to be live before shoppers start looking, and they need to stay live after Christmas.

3. Phones do most of the buying

Adobe expects 57.4% of online holiday spending to happen on phones this season. Last year, phones drove 66.5% of online sales on Christmas Day and about 82% of buy now, pay later purchases. If your store is slow or clumsy on a phone, you lose the sale no matter how well you rank.

Google research with Ipsos found 81% of social media users use Google Search to check out products they discovered on social media. Adobe expects revenue from social media to grow 17% this season, and revenue from affiliates and partners, including influencers, to grow 12%.

Here is how that plays out. Someone sees your product on TikTok or Instagram. Then they search your brand name plus "review", "discount code", or "vs". Your store should win those searches, not a coupon site.

5. Free shipping and easy returns close the sale

Salesforce says free shipping is the top purchase factor at every income level. The NRF found 82% of shoppers say free returns are a major consideration when they buy, and retailers expect about 17% of holiday sales to come back. Clear shipping and return information is not just good service. It is what gets you picked.

What shoppers search for, holiday by holiday

Halloween: October 31

The NRF expects a record $13.5 billion in Halloween spending this year, with 74% of Americans celebrating. Costumes lead at $4.4 billion, followed by decorations at $4.3 billion and candy at $4.1 billion. Pet costumes alone are expected to hit $0.92 billion.

  • Top kids' costume: Spider-Man. Top adult costume: witch. Top pet costume: pumpkin, followed by hot dog.
  • 27% plan to shop online, and 32% get costume ideas from online searches.

Typical searches: "kids superhero costume", "hot dog dog costume", "outdoor halloween decorations", "couples halloween costume ideas", and "costume delivered by friday".

What to do now: it is late for a brand new Halloween page to rank this year, but you can still update your existing Halloween collection, add clear "order by" dates, and plan your November 1 switch. After Halloween, do not delete the collection. Mark down what is left, keep the page live, and it will be stronger next September.

Early November: gift guide season

Once Halloween is over, gift searches take off. Diwali on November 8, Veterans Day sales, and Singles Day on November 11 all land in the same week.

Typical searches: "gifts for mom", "gifts for him under 50", "stocking stuffers", "white elephant gift ideas", "secret santa gifts under 25", "gifts for coworkers", "gifts for people who have everything", and "[brand] gift set".

This is the best window for your gift guide collections to get crawled and start ranking before the big week.

Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday: November 26 to 30

Typical searches: "[brand] black friday", "[brand] black friday sale", "black friday [category] deals", "cyber monday [product]", "[brand] discount code", and "[product] vs [product]".

Adobe expects the best deals to land on different days by category:

  • Thanksgiving: sporting goods
  • Black Friday: TVs, toys, apparel, appliances, and furniture
  • Cyber Monday: electronics and computers

Peak discounts are expected to reach 30% on electronics, 29% on toys, and 23% on apparel.

Cyber Week is not just for big-ticket gifts. Adobe expects shoppers to stock up on everyday items too. Compared with the September average, Cyber Week spending is forecast to be up 210% for clothing basics, 150% for personal hygiene, 113% for baby products, and 93% for pet products. If you sell everyday products, this is your week as well.

On Small Business Saturday, November 28, searches like "shop small", "small business gifts", and "independent [category] brands" spike. If you are an independent brand, say so clearly on your homepage and about page.

Hanukkah: December 4 to 12

Typical searches: "hanukkah gifts", "hanukkah gift ideas for kids", "8 nights of hanukkah gifts", "hanukkah gifts for adults", and "hanukkah decorations". If your products fit, build a Hanukkah collection and publish it by late November, before Cyber Week traffic drowns everything out.

Green Monday to Christmas Eve: December 14 to 24

In mid-December, searches shift from "what to buy" to "can I still get it in time".

Typical searches: "arrives before christmas", "last minute gifts", "same day delivery gifts", "[product] in stock near me", "gift card", "e-gift card", and "personalized gifts fast shipping".

Here are the 2026 carrier dates published so far:

Carrier and serviceShip by
FedEx Ground EconomyDecember 15
USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class MailDecember 17
USPS Priority MailDecember 18
USPS Priority Mail ExpressDecember 19
FedEx Express SaverDecember 21
FedEx 2DayDecember 22
FedEx overnight servicesDecember 23
UPSNot yet published at time of writing. Check ups.com.

USPS dates are for delivery before December 25 in the lower 48 states. FedEx dates are for arrival by December 24. Your own cutoff should be earlier, because you still need to pick and pack.

Last year, Adobe found curbside pickup peaked on December 23 at 39% of online orders. If you have a store or showroom, make pickup obvious. If you do not, put gift cards and e-gift cards on their own page, in your menu, where search engines and shoppers can find them.

Christmas to New Year's: December 25 to 31

Last year, about 1 in 7 holiday returns happened between December 26 and 31, and returns that week were up 4.7%, according to Adobe.

Typical searches: "[brand] return policy", "[brand] exchange", "after christmas sale", "where can I use [brand] gift card", "new years eve outfit", "new years eve party supplies", and "2027 planner".

Make your returns page easy to find and easy to read. Offer exchanges with a store credit bonus to keep the money in your store. Put your after-Christmas sale on a permanent collection URL, just like Black Friday.

January: resolution season

Once the gifts are opened, people start buying for themselves.

Typical searches: "home gym equipment", "protein powder", "meal prep containers", "closet organizer", "budget planner", "dry january drinks", and "running shoes for beginners".

This is not a niche moment. Shopify's top categories during Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025 already included activewear and fitness and nutrition. Build your January collections in December so they are indexed by New Year's Day.

What to fix on your Shopify store before Black Friday

These are the fixes we see make the biggest difference, in roughly the order we would do them.

1. Put holiday pages on permanent URLs

Use the same URL for Black Friday every year, like /collections/black-friday, not /collections/black-friday-2026. That way the page keeps the links and history it built in past years. Change the year in the title and copy, never in the URL.

Publish it now, even if your deals are not live yet. A short page that says when the sale starts, what it covers, and lets people sign up for early access is enough for Google to find and index it.

One strong Black Friday Cyber Monday page usually beats two thin ones. After the sale, do not delete the page or redirect it to the homepage. Update the copy to say the sale has ended, point shoppers to what is on sale now, and keep it live for next year.

2. Build gift guide collections that match real searches

  • Use Shopify smart collections built on tags or price: gifts for him, gifts for her, gifts for kids, gifts under $25, $50, and $100, stocking stuffers, and best sellers.
  • Give each collection its own short intro, about 80 to 150 words, plus two or three FAQs. A grid of products with the same intro as 10 other collections is thin content.
  • Link the guides from your main menu and homepage. Pages buried four clicks deep get crawled late.
  • Do not build 40 near-identical guides. Pick the ones with real search demand and do them well.

3. Clean up your Shopify product data

Your product data now feeds a lot more than your website. It feeds Google Shopping. It feeds Shopify Catalog, which OpenAI says connects Shopify products to ChatGPT. And it feeds Shopify's agentic storefronts, which let merchants sell through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot.

Check these on your best sellers first:

  • Clear titles: brand, product, and the one attribute people search for, like size, material, or flavor
  • Full descriptions written for people, not stuffed with keywords
  • Barcodes (GTINs) wherever you have them
  • Correct product type and category
  • Variants with real names, like "Large, 42 inch chest", not "Option 3"
  • Metafields for material, size, compatibility, and other details shoppers filter by
  • Alt text on product images that describes the product

4. Get Google Merchant Center holiday-ready

  • Add shipping and return policies in Merchant Center so Google can show delivery speed and return details next to your products.
  • Use sale price and sale price effective dates so your discounts start and stop on time, even at midnight on Thanksgiving.
  • Set up promotions in Merchant Center for discount codes and offers.
  • Check the new AI performance insights. Google made them generally available in the US in September 2026. They compare your brand's share of voice with other brands in AI Mode and AI Overviews.
  • Fill in richer product details. Google says merchants who adopt its core feed best practices see an average 5% increase in conversions the following month. In a lululemon test, Google's new conversational attributes appeared in relevant AI Mode product recommendations 50% of the time.
  • Connect your loyalty program if you have one, so member prices and perks show up across Google.

If products are disapproved or missing, fix that before anything else. Our guide on why products are not showing on Google Shopping covers the common causes, and our Google Shopping management team can take it off your plate.

5. Check your structured data

Most Shopify themes output Product structured data, but many miss shipping details, return policy, and barcodes, or show the wrong price on variant pages. Before November, check:

  • Product and Offer markup with the right price, currency, and availability
  • Sale prices that match the page and your feed exactly
  • Shipping details and a return policy
  • Review ratings only where real reviews are shown on the page

Run your top product and collection pages through Google's Rich Results Test. It takes five minutes and catches most problems.

6. Show delivery dates and cutoffs everywhere

Put your cutoffs on product pages, in the cart, on your shipping page, and in an announcement bar: "Order by December 16 for ground delivery by Christmas." Use your own dates, not the carrier's, and keep them in text, not inside an image, so Google and AI tools can read them.

This one change answers the most common December question before the shopper even asks it.

7. Write product pages that answer gift questions

Shoppers now ask things like "is this a good gift for a 10-year-old who likes science?" Your best-selling product pages should answer:

  • Who it is for and what it is best at
  • Size, fit, and dimensions
  • What is in the box
  • Whether it comes gift-wrapped or with a gift note
  • Delivery time and return window
  • How it compares with your other models

Add a short FAQ to your top 20 products. Keep all of it in the page text, not in images.

8. Make the store fast on phones

  • Test your top landing pages on a real mid-range phone on cellular data, not on office wifi.
  • Remove apps you no longer use. Many leave scripts behind that still slow every page.
  • Compress large hero images and let Shopify serve the right image size.
  • Limit pop-ups to one. Skip the heavy countdown timers and spin-to-win apps in November.
  • Check Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console.

Then set a change freeze. No new apps and no theme changes from the weekend before Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. Only prices and content.

9. Handle sold-out products the right way

Do not delete sold-out products or let them turn into 404 pages in December. Keep the page live, mark it out of stock, add a back-in-stock alert, and link to similar products. Make sure the out-of-stock status matches in your feed and structured data. For items that are gone for good, redirect to the closest collection after the season, not during it.

10. Let search and AI crawlers in

Before the rush, many stores turn on stricter bot protection to stop scalpers and price scrapers. That is fine, but check that it does not also block Googlebot, Bingbot (which Microsoft Copilot relies on), OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), or PerplexityBot. On Shopify, also check your robots.txt.liquid file if you have edited it. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm Google can still load your key pages.

11. Make your holiday return policy easy to find

Many stores extend returns for the holidays, for example: "Items bought November 1 to December 24 can be returned until January 31." Say that on product pages, in the cart, on a dedicated returns page, and in Merchant Center. With 82% of shoppers calling free returns a major consideration, it is one of the easiest ways to win a close call.

12. Get reviews and creator content moving now

Ask October buyers for reviews this week, so your best sellers have fresh reviews by Black Friday. Add customer photos to product pages. If creators have reviewed your products on YouTube or social media, link to those reviews. Shoppers check them, and so do AI tools.

13. Win your own brand searches

Searches like "[your brand] black friday", "[your brand] discount code", and "[your brand] coupon" often go to coupon sites. Make your Black Friday page clearly say when your sale starts and what it includes. Consider a simple "offers" page that lists your real, current deals. You should be the best answer for searches about your own store.

14. Set up tracking before the rush

  • In Google Analytics 4, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, and gemini.google.com.
  • In Search Console, confirm your holiday pages are indexed and compare clicks with the same weeks last year.
  • In Merchant Center, check AI performance insights and product issues every few days.
  • Write down every promotion with its dates, so you can match results to offers in January.

Your week-by-week holiday SEO plan

WhenDo this
Oct 12 to 18Review last year's holiday pages. Publish your Black Friday and gift guide collections on permanent URLs. Check bot and crawler settings.
Oct 19 to 31Clean up product data and your Merchant Center feed. Add shipping and return policies. Finish Halloween and plan the November 1 switch.
Nov 1 to 8Switch your homepage and menu to holiday. Launch gift guides. Ask recent buyers for reviews.
Nov 9 to 20Speed check, structured data test, delivery cutoffs, holiday return policy, and brand search pages. Load sale prices with start and end dates.
Nov 21 to 25Change freeze. Only price and content updates.
Nov 26 to 30Watch feed errors, sold-out items, site speed, and AI referrals. Turn the Black Friday page into Cyber Monday on the same URL.
Dec 1 to 13Hanukkah, gift cards, and last ground shipping messages.
Dec 14 to 24Shipping cutoffs, express shipping, pickup, and e-gift cards.
Dec 26 to 31Returns, exchanges, after-Christmas sale, and New Year's.
JanuaryResolution collections. Review results. Update holiday pages to say "see you next year" and keep them live.

After the holidays

January is when you set up next year's wins. Keep every holiday page live. Write down which collections, products, and offers drove sales. Compare Search Console and Merchant Center data with last year. Then put a reminder on your calendar for early September, so next year's holiday pages go live with time to spare.

Common holiday SEO mistakes

  • Launching the Black Friday page on Black Friday
  • Using a new URL every year, like black-friday-2025 and black-friday-2026
  • Deleting holiday pages in January
  • Putting deals, shipping cutoffs, and return windows only inside images
  • Letting sold-out products turn into 404 pages in December
  • Installing new apps the week before Thanksgiving
  • Blocking search and AI bots while trying to block scalpers
  • Showing different prices in the feed, on the page, and in structured data
  • Ignoring your own brand searches and letting coupon sites take them
  • Thin gift guides with the same intro on every collection

Questions and answers

When should a Shopify store start holiday SEO?

Ideally in September. If you are reading this in October, start this week. Google and AI tools need a few weeks to find and trust new pages, so holiday pages should be live by early November at the latest.

Should I use a new URL for Black Friday every year?

No. Use one permanent URL, like /collections/black-friday, and update the content each year. The page keeps the links and history it has built.

What should I do with holiday pages after the season ends?

Keep them live. Update the copy to say the sale has ended and point shoppers to current offers. If you delete or redirect them, you lose what they built for next year.

Do Shopify products show up in ChatGPT during the holidays?

OpenAI says Shopify product data is already connected to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. Shopify also offers agentic storefronts for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. The quality of your product data decides how well you show up.

Is it too late to rank for Black Friday searches this year?

For broad searches like "black friday deals", most smaller stores will not outrank big retailers this year. You can still win your own brand searches, specific product and gift searches, Google Shopping, and AI answers, which is where most holiday sales come from for a Shopify store.

If I only have time for one holiday SEO fix, what should it be?

Clean up your product data. It feeds your product pages, Google Shopping, and AI shopping tools at the same time, so one fix pays off in three places.
