How to get your products into ChatGPT shopping results

Shoppers now ask ChatGPT what to buy, and it answers with products. Here is how it picks them in 2026, and what your store needs to do to be one of them.

The short answer

If you sell on Shopify, your products are already connected to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and OpenAI says no extra work is needed. Other stores can apply to send OpenAI a direct product feed.

Either way, ChatGPT only shows products it thinks match what the shopper asked for. Clean product data, clear product pages, fair prices, and a site that OpenAI's search crawler can reach decide whether you show up.

What ChatGPT shopping looks like in 2026

When someone asks ChatGPT a shopping question, like "help me find a waterproof hiking boot under $150", it can show product options with images, product details, and links to stores where the shopper can buy.

A few things have changed this year:

  • Product results are not ads. OpenAI says product results are chosen by ChatGPT on their own and are not influenced by partnerships. Ads are separate and labeled.
  • Ads arrived. OpenAI started testing ads for Free and Go users in the US on February 9, 2026, and has since expanded ads to more countries.
  • Checkout moved back to your site. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in 2025. In March 2026 it said Instant Checkout was moving to Apps and that it would focus on search and product discovery.
  • Search got better. Also in March 2026, OpenAI updated shopping so people can upload images, set a budget, and compare products more visually.

For most stores, that is good news. Shoppers find products in ChatGPT, then click through and buy on your website.

How products and stores get picked

OpenAI's own help center explains the basics:

  • A product shows up when ChatGPT thinks it matches what the shopper wants. It looks at the question and at context such as the user's memory and custom instructions.
  • When more than one store sells the same product, ChatGPT can show a list of stores. It ranks them on things like availability, price, quality, and whether the store is the maker or main seller of that item.
  • Product and store data comes from third-party providers or directly from merchants.

Product feeds now matter a lot more. Research from Profound, reported by Search Engine Journal in September 2026, looked at more than 1.75 million ChatGPT shopping prompts. On July 10, 2026, the share of product picks coming from connected merchant feeds jumped from 8.26% to 61.54%. At the same time, the number of different stores ChatGPT named fell from 13,524 to 10,607.

Fewer stores are getting named, and stores with clean feeds have the edge.

Eight steps to get your products listed

1. On Shopify: fix the data you already send

OpenAI says Shopify product data is already connected to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no extra work required from each merchant. That means whatever is in your Shopify admin is what ChatGPT gets.

So the work is quality. Use clear product titles, full descriptions, real photos, correct variants, barcodes (GTINs) where you have them, and an accurate product type.

2. Not on Shopify: apply for a direct product feed

OpenAI accepts applications from merchants who want to send a product feed directly. Its developer docs include a product feed specification. The basic fields will look familiar if you run Google Shopping: ID, title, description, product link, image link, price, availability, and brand.

Feeds can be refreshed as often as every 15 minutes, which keeps price and stock accurate. Expect OpenAI to review a sample before accepting your full catalog.

3. Let OpenAI's search crawler in

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. It says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as plain navigational links.

Check your robots.txt file. To allow it, add:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Also check your firewall or security plugin. These tools sometimes block bots even when robots.txt allows them.

4. Keep your Google Merchant Center feed clean too

ChatGPT gets product data from third-party providers as well as from merchants. A clean Google Shopping feed is structured product data you already maintain, and the same fixes help you in both places. Our guide on why products do not show on Google Shopping covers the common feed problems.

5. Write product pages that answer buying questions

Shoppers now describe what they want in detail: budget, size, use, skin type, compatibility. Your product page should answer those questions in plain text:

  • Who the product is for, and what it is best at
  • Sizes, fit, dimensions, and materials
  • Compatibility, such as which models or parts it works with
  • What is in the box
  • Shipping times and the return policy

Put this in text, not inside images. Add Product structured data with the same price and availability shown on the page and in your feed.

6. Be the best store for your own products

Remember what ChatGPT ranks stores on: availability, price, quality, and whether you are the maker or main seller. Keep products in stock, keep prices fair, and make shipping and returns clear.

If you are a brand, make it obvious that your site is the official source for your products. Use the same brand and product names everywhere you sell.

7. Earn reviews and mentions

ChatGPT search reads the web. Reviews on your site, reviews on other sites, comparison articles, and press mentions all help it understand which products are trusted. Our guide on how to get recommended by AI goes deeper on this.

8. Track what ChatGPT sends you

In Google Analytics 4, look for referral traffic where the source is chatgpt.com. Also keep a short list of real buyer prompts, like "best [your product] for [use]", and check them in ChatGPT once a month to see if your products appear.

What about paid ads?

There is now a paid option. Businesses can sign up through OpenAI's advertiser page. OpenAI says ads do not change ChatGPT's answers and are shown separately from them.

Ads can be worth testing, but they do not replace the basics above. Fix your product data first, then decide if paid placement makes sense.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident with a broad bot rule
  • Putting key product details only inside images
  • Showing different prices in your feed, on your page, and in your structured data
  • Thin variant data, like sizes with no measurements
  • Waiting for in-chat checkout instead of fixing product data now

Questions and answers

Can I pay to get my products into ChatGPT shopping results?

No. OpenAI says product results are chosen by ChatGPT on their own and are not ads. ChatGPT ads are a separate, labeled placement.

Do I need Instant Checkout to sell through ChatGPT?

No. In March 2026 OpenAI said Instant Checkout was moving to Apps and that it would focus on search and product discovery. Shoppers click through and buy on your site.

My store is on Shopify. Do I need to do anything?

OpenAI says Shopify product data is already connected through Shopify Catalog, with no extra work required. The quality of that data is still up to you, so clean titles, descriptions, and variants matter.

How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me traffic?

Check Google Analytics 4 for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, and test a short list of real buyer prompts in ChatGPT each month.
