Google AI Overviews: how online stores show up in them

AI Overviews now sit on top of many shopping searches. Here is where they show up, what Google says it takes to appear, and what online stores should do about it.

The short answer

Google says there is nothing special you need to do to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet in search, the same as any other result.

For online stores, the opportunity is in research searches, like "best X for Y" and "X vs Y", where AI Overviews show up most. Buying guides, comparison content, useful category pages, and a clean Merchant Center feed are what get stores into these answers.

How AI Overviews treat shopping searches in 2026

AI Overviews do not show on every search. Google says they appear when its systems think they add something beyond the regular results.

For shopping, the pattern is clear. A Semrush study of US search results found that between November 2025 and April 2026, the share of commercial searches with an AI Overview grew 71%. Over the same period, the share of transactional searches with one fell 5%.

In plain terms:

  • Research searches get AI answers. "Best standing desk for small spaces" or "ceramic vs nonstick pans".
  • Ready-to-buy searches mostly do not. "Buy [product]" or a specific model name still shows mostly shopping results and ads.

That matters because AI Overviews change who gets the click. Pew Research Center looked at the browsing data of 900 US adults. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary. They clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits.

So when an AI Overview shows up, being one of the sources it cites is how you stay visible.

Three ways a store can show up

1. As a cited source in the answer

AI Overviews link to the pages they draw from. For stores, these are usually buying guides, comparison pages, and category pages that explain how to choose.

2. As a product in shopping results

Google's AI Mode shopping pulls from the Shopping Graph, which Google says holds more than 50 billion product listings, with more than 2 billion refreshed every hour. Your products get into it through Merchant Center.

Google is also building checkout into these answers. It launched the Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026, and at Google I/O in May 2026 it announced Universal Cart, an AI shopping cart that works across Google products, including Search, YouTube, and Gmail.

3. In AI Mode follow-up answers

Google says both AI Overviews and AI Mode can use a "query fan-out" method. They run several related searches on subtopics to build one answer. A page that covers the follow-up questions has more chances to be pulled in.

Eight steps to get your store cited

1. Get the basics right

Google is direct about this: there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special files or markup to add. The page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

  • Make sure Google can crawl and index your key pages
  • Do not block snippets with nosnippet or max-snippet settings on pages you want cited
  • Keep pages fast and working well on mobile

2. Write for the research stage

This is where AI Overviews show up most, and where most stores have nothing to offer. Build pages for the questions buyers ask before they choose:

  • Buying guides: "how to choose a [product]"
  • Best-for pages: "best [product] for [use]"
  • Comparisons: "[type A] vs [type B]"
  • Sizing, fit, and compatibility charts

Pick topics where your own products are a good answer. Every guide should link to the products and categories it talks about.

3. Answer first, then explain

Put a direct answer in the first two or three sentences under each heading. Use headings that read like real questions. Use tables for comparisons. This makes it easy for Google to lift a clear answer from your page.

4. Cover the follow-up questions

Think about what a shopper asks next. For "best winter boots for wide feet", the next questions are about warmth, sizing, and waterproofing. Cover them on the page, or link to pages that do.

5. Make category pages useful

Most category pages are just a product grid. Add a short section that helps people choose, a simple comparison table, and a few FAQs. Keep it short enough that the products stay near the top.

6. Make product pages complete

Put specs, sizes, materials, and compatibility in text. Use real photos and show reviews. Add Product structured data that matches what is visible on the page.

7. Keep Merchant Center complete and accurate

Your feed is how products get into Google's shopping answers. Fill in every attribute you can, add GTINs, and keep price and stock accurate. Google also added new Merchant Center data attributes in 2026 to help products show up in AI search. If products are missing, start with why products are not showing on Google Shopping.

8. Build trust signals

Clear About, Contact, and Returns pages, real customer reviews, and mentions on other trusted sites all help Google decide which stores are worth citing.

How to measure it

AI Overview and AI Mode data is already included in the Search Console Performance report totals. In June 2026, Google began rolling out a separate Search Console report for generative AI features. It shows impressions by page, country, device, and date. It does not show clicks yet.

Use it to see which pages get cited. Then compare those pages' clicks in the main report, and track leads and sales, not just traffic. Our guide to zero-click search covers how to think about searches that end without a click.

What not to do

  • Do not stuff pages with FAQs written only to match queries. Answer real questions.
  • Do not publish thin, mass-produced pages. AI answers draw on pages Google already trusts.
  • Do not count on llms.txt for Google. Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in its AI features.
  • Do not block AI features without a real reason. Google has been testing a Search Console control to keep pages out of AI features. For most stores, being cited beats being absent.

Questions and answers

Do I need special schema to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special files or markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

Do AI Overviews show up for product searches?

More on research searches than on ready-to-buy searches. A Semrush study found AI Overviews on commercial searches grew 71% between November 2025 and April 2026, while transactional searches with AI Overviews fell 5%.

Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?

No. The sources cited in an AI Overview are chosen organically. Google does run ads around its AI features through Google Ads, but that is separate from being cited.

How do I know if my store appears in AI Overviews?

Check Search Console. AI feature data is included in the Performance report, and since June 2026 Google has been rolling out a separate generative AI report that shows impressions by page.
